The scenic Grande Ronde Valley and nearby Wallowa-Whitman National Forest and Eagle Cap Wilderness offer Cove visitors numerous opportunities to camp, picnic, hike, fish, observe wildlife, or simply tour the area by horseback, bicycle or motor vehicle. Cove sits on the state-designated Grande Tour Route and is just a few miles off the national Hells Canyon Scenic Byway .
The neighboring city of Union, approximately 8 miles from Cove, features an 18-hole links-style, public golf course named Buffalo Peak . Union is also home to the Historic Union Hotel and the Union County Museum, featuring an exhibit on Cowboys Then and Now. Fifteen miles across the valley from Cove is the City of La Grande. Once an encampment on the historic Oregon Trail, La Grande is now the county seat and the site of Eastern Oregon University. The city offers a variety of overnight accommodations, restaurants, shops, and services. Following the gentle curves of the Union-Cove Highway and meandering foothills leading into La Grande is the Historical Hot Springs Hotel and Musuem and Soaking Tubs. Exiting off of I-84 onto Foothill Road is the Laddmarsh Wildlife where year around bird and wildlife can be observed, and one can fish at Peach Road Fishing Pond.
