A short drive through Cove, just south of Mt. Fanny, Mill Creek Road crosses into the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest and the Eagle Cap Wilderness. Several outdoors destinations just a few miles up the forest service roads provide a multitude of jump-off points for wilderness recreation.
Minam River Lodge
The Minam River Lodge, a special Cove neighbor, is one of few facilities in the USA offering full service accommodations in the midst of a national wilderness access only by hiking, horseback, or small plane. Located near the Minam River and historic Red’s Horse Ranch (now a national forest service station), the facility consists of a main lodge with restaurant, various sleeping accommodations ranging from private cabins to teepees, and facilities for pack animals. Pack trips, guided trail rides, and fishing excursions can be arranged through Minam River Lodge.
Moss Springs Campground and Trailhead
The Moss Springs Campground (or La Grande Ranger Station) is located about 9 miles east of Cove on forest road 6220 (via Mill Creek Road) at an elevation of 5,400 ft. Moss Springs is a major trailhead for hiking and horseback riding into the wilderness area, with 12 campsites (tent and trailer), restrooms, feeder/holding pens, hitching rails, and stock water. No advance reservations are needed. Camp fee and trail park permits are available from the La Grande Ranger District at (541) 962-8500.
